Victor Wembanyama writes another chapter in NBA history. The San Antonio Spurs star has won his first Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the first unanimous winner in the history of the award.

The real challenge was probably reaching 65 games. But I’m really happy to have won this award and especially proud to be the first to receive it unanimously

Victor Wembanyama

The recognition comes at the end of a dominant defensive season, in which Wembanyama – also in the MVP conversation – led the league with 3.1 blocks per game, establishing himself as one of the most impactful rim protectors in the modern NBA.

The most striking detail, however, is in the voting: the Frenchman received every available first-place vote, a result never achieved before in the history of the award, which was established in 1983.

Behind him in the race were Chet Holmgren and Ausar Thompson, but neither ever truly challenged the dominance of the Spurs big man, who was a constant force on that end of the floor.

I think the most important thing is helping the team win. Individual awards come after

At just 22 years old, Wembanyama also becomes the youngest DPOY ever, adding another milestone to a rapid rise that has already placed him among the league’s elite players.

It’s something special. Obviously it was a goal of mine, but I didn’t think it would come this early

Victor Wembanyama

The award validates the French big man’s total impact: not just numbers, but a constant presence in the paint, defensive versatility, and the ability to alter every possession. A true franchise cornerstone who has already transformed the Spurs’ defense.

And the feeling is that this is only the beginning.
