For months, the Miami Heat have been viewed as the frontrunners to land Giannis Antetokounmpo should the Milwaukee Bucks ultimately decide to move on from their franchise superstar. However, a new report suggests the Boston Celtics may hold a crucial advantage in the race.
According to The Athletic insiders Sam Amick and Eric Nehm, Giannis is reportedly “very intrigued” by Boston’s roster construction and long-term outlook.
There’s the question of how Antetokounmpo views the Celtics’ situation, and that may matter more than anything else. While many around the NBA have long believed he was interested in joining the Heat, there are also signs that he’s very intrigued by the possibility of going to Boston

That distinction could prove significant in shaping the Greek star’s eventual decision. The Celtics and Heat enter this offseason from very different positions. Boston finished second in the Eastern Conference at 56-26 and entered the playoffs as one of the title favorites, only to suffer a stunning first-round collapse after blowing a 3-1 series lead against the Philadelphia 76ers.
We’re talking about a team that, by virtually every objective measure, is deeper and more dynamic than Miami, and therefore could remain competitive even after completing a blockbuster trade

Despite the disappointing playoff exit, Boston still boasts one of the deepest rosters in the league, led by superstar Jayson Tatum and a Jaylen Brown coming off the best season of his career.
Miami’s situation is considerably less attractive from a championship standpoint. The Heat finished 43-39 and were eliminated in the Play-In Tournament. Beyond Bam Adebayo, one of the NBA’s premier two-way big men, Miami lacks the depth and star power currently available in Boston.
Giannis wants to win now: why the Celtics may have the edge
That is the heart of Giannis’ thinking. The two-time MVP has made it clear that his top priority is returning to championship contention immediately. As a result, joining a team capable of remaining elite even after sacrificing major assets in a trade is far more important than simply preferring a particular city.
Despite dealing with physical setbacks, Antetokounmpo remains one of the league’s most dominant forces. He finished last season averaging 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists while shooting 62.4% from the field. Miami continues to generate significant buzz in the rumor mill – with reports of an offer already being discussed and speculation that Giannis is interested in purchasing a home in Florida – but Boston offers something the Heat currently do not: the certainty of remaining competitive from Day 1.
Trade scenarios have already surfaced that would send Jaylen Brown to Milwaukee as part of a direct deal for Antetokounmpo.
Giannis is reportedly interested in staying in the Eastern Conference. The remaining question is whether the appeal of Heat Culture will outweigh Boston’s roster depth. If the goal is to win another championship as quickly as possible, the Celtics appear to have the stronger case.
