In the NBA, it only takes a few seconds of footage to spark a debate. It happened with the Los Angeles Lakers, where a heated exchange on the bench between JJ Redick and Luka Doncic quickly made the rounds on social media.

For the Lakers’ head coach, however, there’s no story here.

The incident took place during the road win over the Golden State Warriors (129-101). As he was subbed out, Doncic walked toward the bench without returning the customary “fist bump” from his coach. Redick followed him, and the two exchanged some animated words. A moment that, stripped of context, fueled interpretations and speculation.

Jarred Vanderbilt stepped in as a buffer, physically positioning himself between the two while Doncic rose from his seat to continue the exchange.

According to Redick, the explanation is simple: business as usual in a highly competitive environment.

Honestly, I didn’t think much of it. I don’t think Luka did either. We have a great relationship and I really value him. These are things that happen. Not every game, but fairly often

The numbers back it up. Against Golden State, Doncic finished with 26 points and 8 assists. In the following win over the Sacramento Kings (128-104), the Slovenian raised his level again with 28 points and 9 assists.
