In the NBA, it only takes a few seconds of footage to spark a debate. It happened with the Los Angeles Lakers, where a heated exchange on the bench between JJ Redick and Luka Doncic quickly made the rounds on social media.
For the Lakers’ head coach, however, there’s no story here.
I don’t know why it went viral. To me, it seemed completely normal
JJ Redick
The incident took place during the road win over the Golden State Warriors (129-101). As he was subbed out, Doncic walked toward the bench without returning the customary “fist bump” from his coach. Redick followed him, and the two exchanged some animated words. A moment that, stripped of context, fueled interpretations and speculation.
Jarred Vanderbilt stepped in as a buffer, physically positioning himself between the two while Doncic rose from his seat to continue the exchange.
If you’ve ever been around an NBA team full of people who live for competition, sometimes things can get a little chaotic when everyone’s trying to move in the same direction
Dave McMenamin
According to Redick, the explanation is simple: business as usual in a highly competitive environment.
Honestly, I didn’t think much of it. I don’t think Luka did either. We have a great relationship and I really value him. These are things that happen. Not every game, but fairly often
JJ Redick
The coach explained that situations like this are part of the game: moments of frustration, immediate clarifications, direct confrontation. Sometimes between coach and player, other times between teammates.
It’s competition. Two people trying to win and trying to be on the same page
JJ Redick
Context matters. The Lakers were coming off three straight losses, including two late-game heartbreakers against Orlando and Phoenix. In that kind of stretch, pressure inevitably rises.

The Relationship Between JJ Redick and Luka Doncic Remains Strong
Those close to Doncic describe a strong, direct bond between the two, built on competitiveness and mutual respect. Both demand a lot – especially in difficult moments.
The numbers back it up. Against Golden State, Doncic finished with 26 points and 8 assists. In the following win over the Sacramento Kings (128-104), the Slovenian raised his level again with 28 points and 9 assists.
Signs of a team responding – not a fractured locker room.
External Noise and Media Pressure Around the Lakers
Coaching the Los Angeles Lakers means living under constant scrutiny. Redick knows that well.
It’s probably one of the reasons I wanted to coach here. Everything is amplified
JJ Redick
The coach said he even joked with Doncic about the episode:
We were laughing about it together. I told him, ‘I didn’t feel any tension.’ And he said, ‘Me neither’
JJ Redick
According to Redick, opinions and debates have always been part of professional sports. The difference now is the speed at which every detail becomes public and goes viral.
There have always been opinions. Now they’re just more accessible and amplified. But it’s normal
JJ Redick
The video made noise, but inside the locker room, the volume was much lower. In an era where every gesture is isolated and dissected, the line between tension and simple confrontation gets thinner. On the court, though, only one thing matters: winning.
