Things aren’t exactly going well in Memphis, and the latest update doesn’t help: Morant will be sidelined for at least two weeks due to a Grade 1 strain in his right calf. The medical staff will check on him again in 14 days, but for now the only certainty is that the Grizzlies’ leader won’t be available for a while.
The injury occurred in the opening minutes of the 108–100 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on November 15, just as Morant seemed to have found a good rhythm. He started strong, then the calf discomfort forced him to head to the locker room midway through the first quarter.
The issue isn’t expected to be particularly serious, but the risk of aggravation is always present with muscle injuries. For that reason, the medical staff has no intention of speeding up the process: Memphis can’t afford to lose its franchise player for a longer stretch.
The Grizzlies’ backcourt situation has suddenly become quite thin. Along with Morant, Scotty Pippen Jr., Ty Jerome, and Javon Small are also sidelined. A series of absences that is forcing coach Tuomas Iisalo to redesign his rotations practically every night.
