In Los Angeles, there’s a strange atmosphere: a mix of JJ Redick’s tactical calm and the hope of getting Luka Doncic back soon. The Lakers won Game 1 against the Rockets, but they know Houston won’t just stand by.

Looking ahead to Game 2 (tomorrow at 4:30 AM), Redick was crystal clear with his team: no relaxing.

We know in Game 2 they’ll be the hungrier team, and we have to come out with the same level of intensity and urgency we had in Game 1. We just need to clean up our game and do better

JJ Redick

A factor that could shift the balance of the series is the presence of Kevin Durant. After missing Game 1 with a knee issue, the Rockets star will change the Lakers’ defensive schemes, which had focused on limiting Alperen Sengun, as well as taking away perimeter looks from Sheppard and the drives of Amen Thompson.

LeBron vs Durant: A New (and Possibly Final) Playoff Chapter

Durant’s presence will also impact the Lakers’ workload, mainly because LeBron James will take on the responsibility of guarding the two-time NBA champion.

It sets up a historic matchup: the two haven’t faced each other in the playoffs since the 2018 NBA Finals, when Durant – then with the Golden State Warriors – won both the NBA title and Finals MVP, averaging 28.8 points (40% from three), 10 rebounds, and 7.5 assists.

Durant’s absence in Game 1 allowed LeBron more freedom defensively and the chance to focus on offense. He delivered with 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 13 assists, leading Los Angeles to a 1-0 series lead – but starting in Game 2, things will surely change.

The Luka Effect: When Will He Return?

The real news of the day, however, is Luka Doncic’s return to the gym. After undergoing treatment in Spain, the Slovenian was seen shooting: nothing too intense, just free throws and light movement, but enough to lift the mood in the locker room.

It’s unlikely we’ll see him on the floor in this first round, even though some insiders recently mentioned a hypothetical (almost utopian) return in Game 3. Still, as Rui Hachimura pointed out, Luka’s impact goes beyond scoring:

People don’t realize how much it helps just having him around. His jokes and his personality make us happy and give us energy that goes beyond basketball

Rui Hachimura

While waiting for an unlikely miracle, the Lakers must keep their foot on the gas. Game 2 is around the corner: Houston will be motivated and welcome back Durant, but after tasting victory in the series opener, Los Angeles has the confidence of a team that hasn’t lost home-court advantage.
