The Cleveland Cavaliers opened their playoff series against the Toronto Raptors with an impressive 126-113 victory, the result of a high-level team performance. While Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, and Max Strus led the scoring, it was Evan Mobley who made the biggest impact with his basketball IQ, balance, and ability to influence every phase of the game.
After the game, Evan Mobley expressed full confidence in where the team stands right now.
I feel like I’m entering my best stretch. We’ve worked all season to clean up every detail, and now almost everyone is healthy, the team is in the right mindset, and I think we’re peaking at the right time
Evan Mobley
His 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists in 33 minutes were crucial not for volume scoring, but for the quality of his decisions. Mobley attacked decisively from the perimeter, beating defenders and getting to the rim with increased aggression – an area of his game that has grown significantly since returning from a left calf injury.
When the Raptors defense tried to double or clog the lane, the Cleveland big responded with excellent reads, finding open teammates and keeping the offense flowing. His ability to balance scoring and playmaking gave structure to the Cavaliers’ attack.
The matchup with Scottie Barnes, already a rival in the 2021 Rookie of the Year race, was also intriguing. After a strong start from the Raptors forward, it was Mobley who gradually took control, making his presence felt on both ends of the floor.
Late in the game, Evan Mobley emphasized the Cavaliers’ mindset.
We knew they weren’t going to go away easily, so we stayed committed to our game plan. They made tough shots, but we kept applying pressure and, offensively, we did what we needed to respond
Evan Mobley
Game 1 is in the books, and the message is clear: these Cavaliers are serious contenders.
