In Dallas, the noise of trade rumors is always loud. But Anthony Davis, at least for now, appears unfazed by the reports surrounding his name and focused on just one thing: making the Mavericks work.

Despite being linked to several trade rumors that paint him as a potential key piece ahead of the next trade deadline (Atlanta Hawks?), Davis sent a clear message after the 110-104 win over Houston. His focus is on the present, but even more on the future – one that runs through the return of Kyrie Irving.

He’s an incredible player, a Hall of Famer. He changes our identity. When he comes back, we’ll be a better team.

Coming from the former Lakers star, those words carry weight given the context. The Mavs have struggled out of the gate, with a 13-23 record and 11th place in the West reflecting a difficult season.

The Mavs Are Not Ready to Rebuild

Still, Davis continues to send strong signals on the court. Against the Rockets, he logged a season-high 39 minutes, finishing with 26 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks – a vintage performance from a quiet leader.

When Dallas acquired him in the blockbuster trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Lakers last February, the plan was clear: Davis and Irving as the franchise’s cornerstone duo for years to come. Reality, however, was unforgiving. Injuries, and just three quarters played together before everything came to a halt again. From there, the season took a very different turn.

Now the future remains full of question marks. Dallas could decide to rebuild around Kyrie Irving and generational talent Cooper Flagg, the projected No. 1 pick in the 2025 Draft, but owner Patrick Dumont appears inclined to be patient: the plan is to test the trio featuring Davis and the future 2025 star before making any definitive decisions.

Maybe this isn’t the best moment for the Mavs. But as long as Anthony Davis is on the floor, Dallas can still afford to believe.
